"I'm still confused. Why did the Merc recently hire three business reporters - just before it planned to fire dozens of people in the newsroom? Could you address that issue in a future story?" Sorry. My thoughts were cut off. But anyhow, from what I've seen in other newspapers is that they cut down on the veteran reporters and replace them with young, rookie, and low-pay reporters, which essentially saves the newspaper a lot of money in retirement plans and salaries. And that's where the news suffers. News quality is put at risk.
