Biography, Crime drama
Actor Tom Hardy goes crazy, twice, for this hectically violent portrait of the gangster Kray twins, Reggie and Ronnie, the scourge of Swinging London in the 1960s -- both of them portrayed by Hardy. Working from John Pearson’s biography, screenwriter-director Brian Helgeland (42, Mystic River, L.A. Confidential) lays on the Guy Ritchie stuff, augmented by Chazz Palminteri and Emily Browning as a visiting American hood and Reggie’s love interest, respectively. But it’s Hardy’s dual perf that dominates the film, for better or worse. One of these guys would be enough. Reggie is the relatively smooth one; Ronnie is a psychopathic oaf with a cockney accent so thick he sounds like he’s got a mouthful of mashed potatoes. Too much of what would ordinarily be a good thing. Also costarring David Thewlis and Christopher Eccleston (131 min.).
