Lee Fields & The Expressions

When: Fri., May 18, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $20, $25

In an article for Vice.com, Ellis Jones characterized Lee Fields, rather adoringly, as "the coolest motherfucker to ever sing words into a microphone." Maybe that says more about Jones than Fields, but the sentiment rings true. A self-described "True" soul singer (perhaps one of the few left), Fields has been crooning since 1969, and has evolved through several sub-genres of the umbrella term. He's done dance and funk and played with bands big and small, but recently he's back to working on emotionally raw, vintage-sounding soul songs. With the support of labels such as Truth and Soul and Stones Throw records, 2009's My World marked a re-birth for Fields, who had previously been not much more than an obscure legend, much like fellow Daptone signee Charles Bradley. Fields, though, is unique in his range, from very sweet and sultry to ragged and vulnerable. His new album is called Faithful Man. He'll perform at Brick and Mortar Music Hall (1710 Mission St. San Francisco) on Thursday, May 18 at 9 p.m., $20, $25, BrickAndMortarMusic.com
