Bay Area icon Ledisi Young has been bringing her own version of soul to the stage since the late ’90s — and never let anything stop her. Better known as Ledisi, the R&B singer — originally from New Orleans — moved to Oakland when she was only 8 years old and spent most of her years growing up here, too. Following a number of gigs at local clubs around the Bay Area, she gained attention for her uplifting vocals accompanied by her funky band called Anibade. Since no record labels would sign her at the time, she decided to self-release her first album, Soulsinger: The Revival, in 2000. Her follow-up, Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue, won Outstanding Jazz Album at the California Music Awards in 2003. Six albums and 12 Grammy nominations later, Young came out with another record in 2017 named Let Love Rule. The 15-track album delivers urban jazz through soft, lightweight melodies and upbeat claps.
