Inspired by the rescue dogs and their handlers on the scene after the 9/11 attacks, Leah Waarvik sought training in wilderness search-and-rescue. She and her dog Emma are members of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Team. At Laurel Bookstore (4100 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland) on Saturday, June 28, Waarvik discusses I Sit and Stay, her manual for children on how to stay safe after becoming lost in the wilderness. 4 p.m.
