Typically sardonic soaper by director Pedro Almodovar flaunts its gay sex and drug use so nakedly it's hard to believe it was made in Spain. A gay film director has a violent falling-out with his two lovers, while his transsexual "sister" develops troubles of her own. Almodovar's florid kinks are right on the film's surface, but his humor is buried deep, making this a tortuous two hours for all but the most committed fans. (1987)
