Lauryn Hill

When: Thu., Feb. 16, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $49.50-$90

Or rather, Ms.Lauryn Hill, as she's better known. The singer and rapper who launched her career with a stunning rendition of the gospel tune "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," which she sang for the movie Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, has been on a tumultuous path since then. In the mid-Nineties she reconfigured herself as a street-smart member of hip-hop group Fugees, whose 1995 album, The Score, went multi-platinum. But Hill is better remembered for the solo album she cut in 1998, which was packed with hit songs. Not only did it help consolidate neo-soul as a genre; it also showed Hill's tremendous staying power. TheMiseducation of Lauryn Hill has sold several million copies, and it's considered obligatory listening for any self-respecting fan of hip-hop or R&B. In the years since, Hill has entered a strange downward spiral, signified in part by her messy stage performance at the Paramount Theatre in 2007, with some of the best musicians in the Bay Area backing her up. Rumors of personal tragedy circulated, though none were ever confirmed -- and the resulting gossip only added to Hill's mystique. She'll make a local comeback this week, hopefully to better results. At The Warfield (982 Market St., San Francisco) on Thursday, Feb. 16. 8 p.m., $49-$59.
