Re: “Erykah Badu Gets a Second Chance in Oakland Tonight

The criticism that Erykah's performance was "self satisfying and indulgent" seems to miss the mark. After all, why would we expect anything less? I too walked away from the performance quiet, but it wasn't because I was disappointed -- I was in awe. Her set list was dynamic. Personally, I find the endless vocal riffing of many of her peers to be more self satisfying and indulgent, and with fewer benefits. Unlike many of her musical contemporaries, Erykah isn't afraid leave space and take risks. She can rock an MPC -- live. Vocally, she was on point -- she delivered every song clearly, convincingly, and in tune. Monday's performance showed that she can belong in any genre, and in 20 years, people may even say that she created her own.
