When: Dec. 1-31 2011

Dave Meeker's sculptures, sleek aluminum tracks housing high-intensity LED bulbs and colored gel filters, resemble, superficially, the tubular lights designed for small pictures €ššššš‚šššš crossed with Dan Flavin's trailblazing 1960s neon works. Meeker's structures, mounted vertically or leaning diagonally, emit auras of intense prismatic color that dissolve the walls as Flavin's did. His rainbow-palette choices are local and idiosyncratic, though, based on "the urban landscapes of Oakland [e.g., Fairyland, a local 7 Eleven, the Fox Theater], historical landscapes as seen and recorded by others, and interior landscapes -- imagined landscapes ...." Meeker focuses on the horizon as both "the end of what we see and the beginning of what we imagine." Also showing: Interlocking Terrain, works by gallery artists on real and imagined geographies, curated by sculptor Charlie Milgrim. Both shows run through Dec. 31 at Mercury 20 Gallery (475 25th St., Oakland). 510-701-4620 or
