Land of Talk

When: Mon., Nov. 2, 8:30 p.m. 2009
Price: $10

Montreal has been fertile ground for indie rock lately, and Land of Talkis no exception. Led by singer-guitarist Elizabeth Powell, the trio (whose other members have rotated) made an impressive debut with Applause Cheer Boo Hiss, a refreshingly raw take on the genre. The EP also caught the ear of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, who ended up producing the band's full-length debut, last year's Some Are Lakes. The professional (and romantic) collaboration led to a collection of slower, sadder, more stretched-out songs, lamenting lost love ("It's Okay") and ill-fated romance ("Got a Call"). But the music's real magnetism lies in the strength of Powell's character, which is feminine but not girlie, vulnerable yet resolute (Powell was a former punk). Expect to hear new material from the band's latest EP, Fun and Laughter, when Land of Talk plays Cafe du Nord (2174 Market St., San Francisco) on Monday, Nov. 2. 8:30 p.m., $10.
