We don’t learn much about Yves Saint Laurent the man in this worshipful documentary bio, other than that he lived for his work, loved and collected beautiful art, and self-medicated with drugs and alcohol to combat his depression. Filmmaker Pierre Thoretton’s doc is pretty much the officially approved life story of the influential Parisian fashion designer and thus has unlimited access, including a running commentary by YSL’s longtime companion and business partner Pierre Bergé. But we can’t help feeling a less structured, more subjective point of view is called for. (103 min.)
Director: Pierre Thoretton
Producer: Hugues Charbonneau and Kristina Larsen
