Lake Merritt’s hundred-year-old boathouse has been beautifully renovated into a destination restaurant/lounge with an outdoor grill, an eighty-foot bar, two fireplaces, and two dining rooms with beautiful views of the lake and the hills beyond. The food doesn’t quite live up to the setting, but among the menu standouts are luscious, meaty crab cakes; potato “risotto” with salmon, mushrooms, and bacon; and a tiny, delectable pineapple upside-down cake. Libations include five microbrews crafted at the restaurant’s sister establishment, the Beach Chalet in San Francisco.
