Historical drama
Actress Florence Pugh carves out a memorable performance as a hard-hearted Victorian wife in the chilly north of England, in rookie director William Oldroyd’s striking adaptation of an 1865 novella, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, by Nikolai Leskov. As the unloved spouse of a dangerously unfeeling husband (Paul Hilton), Pugh’s Katherine silently stews in her own juices while we wait for the inevitable Shakespearean bloodshed to begin. No marching forests here, but quite a cast of untrustworthy relatives and servants gathered around the malevolent Katherine, who glows with a brilliant but lonely wrath. Screenplay adapted by Alice Birch. Costarring Cosmo Jarvis and Naomi Ackie (89 min., 2016, not rated) (K.V.)
