An escaped convict (Josh Brolin) barges into the home and the lives of a distraught single mother (Kate Winslet) and her morose young son (Gattlin Griffith) in a small New Hampshire community, circa 1987, and soon the mom and the fugitive are canoodling over peach pie – he bakes them with care and even takes the time to play baseball with the kid. Sounds dull and is, despite the attention lavished on the slim, predictable story, adapted by director Jason Reitman from Joyce Maynard’s novel. The most interesting thing about this is the appearance of actress Maika Monroe as Mandy, the new girl in town (111 min.).
