Named after the patroness of musicians, Grammy Award-winning Angeleno band La Santa Cecilia has captured the hearts of music lovers across the country with its infectious fusion of Latinx music like cumbia and boleros with sounds of their American upbringings like bossa nova. It is this harmonization of rhythms and vocals, led by Marisol “La Marisoul” Hernandez, that makes the music appealing even to those who do not speak Spanish. As with many other bands, La Santa Cecilia has been an advocate in the fight surrounding immigration. Back in 2013, the band members teamed up with the National Day Laborer Organizing Network for the video of their song “ICE El Hielo,” depicting undocumented immigrants navigating going to work with the fear of deportation haunting them daily — five years later, this track is as relevant as ever. Here’s to hoping it is part of the set list planned for the upcoming Bay Area tour stop.
