La Fe

When: Jan. 5-29 2011

Chela Fielding embraces "detritus that once was a part of our lives," so Faith, La Fe in Spanish, seems an appropriate title: The artist imbues miscellaneous scavenged artifacts with life and meaning that are communicated to the observant, disbelief-suspended viewer. "Just As It Is," assembled from a kitchen cabinet, frying pan, horse muzzle, photograph, and light fixture, suggests a Pop collaboration between Rauschenberg and Johns; it's both eclectic and hermetic. The two "Beaded Treasures" assemblages suggest bizarrely accoutered spinal cords, barbecue skewers, or swimming-pool lane-marker ropes. "Cabinet," with its pole-mounted bathroom receptacles, suggests some Surrealist variety of post-minimalism. Fielding's paintings ("From Memory," "Big Bear"), digital photos ("What Am I," "Flying a Chicken," "YoYos," "Spitting Rainbows") and porcelain cups infuse found imagery with joyous whimsy. La Fe runs (along with Mercury Multiples, affordable original art by gallery members) through January 29 at Mercury 20 Gallery (475 25th St., Oakland). 510-701-4620 or MercuryTwenty.com
