On an unnamed British submarine, every day is the same. When its occupants aren’t performing their umpteenth maintenance check, they’re reading letters from home, watching sappy rom-coms, and torturing one another with music in an attempt to ward off the boredom. But there are worse things than having nothing to do. When a distress call is sent out from the Russian submarine Kursk, the British sub is in a perfect position to help. Unfortunately, doing so runs the risk of causing an international incident. As time runs out for the sinking Russian sub, the British must decide whether saving the life of one crew is worth harming international relations. Bryony Lavery’s critically acclaimed drama makes its West Coast premiere in this gender-swapped production by Theatre Lunatico. Directed by Tina Taylor and featuring an all-female cast and claustrophobic set design, this tense character study is about the thin line between duty and compassion.
