KOTA the Friend

When: Fri., March 9, 8 p.m. 2018
Price: $15
There’s a photo of Brooklyn rapper KOTA the Friend on his website smiling and petting a bodega cat. It’s exactly the kind of vibe you’d expect from an artist who calls himself “the Friend.” And the artist’s music matches this sentiment: breezy, chillwave beats and a soft-spoken, uplifting flow. He’s making a name for himself on the East Coast, and he’s definitely channeling the jazzier, brainier side of classic New York hip-hop à la Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. But his music has even lighter grooves, rounded out by complex, subtle nuances. KOTA plays trumpet, guitar, keyboard, and bass, and he puts all that musical know-how into his production. He’s got a dreamy sound not often heard in hip-hop, but probably one we’ll hear more of very soon.
