Kool A.D.

When: Thu., Aug. 23, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $15, $20

A few years since rising to Internet fame with their "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" hit, the emcees of alt-hip-hop group Das Racist have gone solo, each releasing his own album -- or sequence of albums, in the case of rapper Kool A.D., who already followed up last year's The Palm Wine Drinkardwith a new one, 51. On this new bit of lo-fi artistry, the Alameda-raised rapper recruits a cast of Bay Area stalwarts, including Trackademicks, Boots Riley, Main Attrakionz, and Young L from The Pack. With his deadpan delivery and stockpile of punch lines, Kool A.D. usually has no trouble besting his peers, but the guests still enhance most songs on 51. A Marvin Gaye sample on "Oooh" underpins slurry verses by Main Attrakionz, and Young L's video-game sounds give "Damien Hirst" a sharp, contemporary edge. Kool A.D. will celebrate an East Bay homecoming this Thursday, Aug. 23, at The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland) with many of his friends in tow, including Fat Tony, Main Attrakionz, Trackademicks, and Kech Phrase. 9 p.m., $15, $20.
