The fight scenes with King Kong versus a) the octopus, and b) the largest and nastiest of the “Skull Crawlers,” are thrilling in a wowie-zowie CGI, Imax-screen way. But the rest of Legendary Entertainment/Warner Bros’ giant monster party is strictly out of the standard-brand playbook. Best reason to watch it all the way through: John C. Reilly as Hank Marlow, a stranded WWII American bomber pilot who provides comic relief between creature attacks. It took four writers to help director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) put this okay entry in the long-running franchise to bed, but even the implied satirical putdown of Yankee militarism seems stale. Its slickness is not a virtue. Also with Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Corey Hawkins, Toby Kebbell (as Kong), Jing Tian, and Samuel L. Jackson as a Vietnam-era army officer. Bless its furry, enormous head (120 min., 2017, rated PG-13) (K.V.)
