Adventure, Drama
This rousing dramatized account of author/explorer Thor Heyerdahl and his 4,300-mile, 101-day voyage across the Pacific in 1947, from Peru to the Tuamotu Islands aboard a balsa-wood raft, is a “boys’ adventure” to the nth degree, but with a serious genesis. Heyerdahl (winningly played by actor Pål Sverre Hagen) was trying to prove that South Americans migrated to Polynesia in prehistoric times, and he and his five crew members battle storms, sharks, and other natural foes to prove his point – pure conjecture raised to the level of sweaty-palms adventure. Never mind the occasional overacting. Has similar sea-going survival thrills as Life of Pi, but somehow means more. Ably directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, and costarring Anders Baasmo Christiansen, Tobias Santelmann, Gustaf Skarsgård, Odd Magnus Williamson, and Jakob Oftebro. Written by Petter [cq] Skavlan and Allan Scott (101 min., 2012, rated PG-13)
Director: Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg
Cast: Pal Valheim Hagen, Anders Christiansen, Gustaf Skarsgård, Odd Williamson, Tobias Santelmann, Jakob Oftebro and Agnes Kittelsen
