Re: “Kaplan, Bates, deHaan, and Roy, Plus No on 8

In the not too distant past the East Bay Express could be counted on to dig beneath the surface of allegations and accusations to get to a truth that other Bay Area publications missed. However, in the Peralta Community College race between Marlon McWilson and Marcie Hodge, you fell for the dirty tricks of the Hodge campaign and were thus duped into basing your endorsement on false information.

While Marlon McWilson was faced with a felony action due a fraudulent act that was committed by another, he was ultimately exonerated when the truth came out. Yet you chose to believe an "anonymous" fax that was sent to a number of local papers. In this instance the Express did not bother to seek out the truth and instead allowed your paper to be used by supporters of Marcie Hodge.

Ms. Hodge has been documented to be a totally unengaged and non-participating Peralta trustee. She regularly comes late to meetings; rarely speaks; does not work on any board committees; and received an unprecedented censure from her collegues. To create an issue upon which to run for Oakland City Council she was proven to be completely untruthful about the expenditures of the District's International Studies Program that earns approx. 3 million valuable dollars per year for the District.

The current group of Peralta Trustees are rarely in agreement on a number of major issues, however all of the Trustees except Marcie Hodge have endorsed Marlon McWilson for election to the Board; a fact that speaks volumes.

You were right on one point, the Peralta District has had challenges. For that reason alone it boggles the mind that you would endorse a do-nothing with a questionable track record of honesty instead of a young man who works tirelessly for our youth and is well recognized for giving much to the community.

The Express blew it on this one.
