Re: “Opinion: Getting the Shaft From Schaaf

It was Mayor Quan who actually paved the way for more money to come into Oakland, not Mayor Schaaf who gets the credit. It was also Quan, who cut her own salary and staff to help make ends meet at the City. That previous mayor set a better example of more fairness across the board so that Oakland City could get past the recession back then.

However, in a better economy, Mayor Schaaf is great at spending on everything else, except for the real employees who do the work that keeps the City going.

Mayor Schaaf benefited from the previous mayor's ability to fix the budget. The money flowed in as soon as Mayor Schaaf stepped in. Schaaf saw a lot of funds coming through, so she raised her own salary and increased her administrative staff with more high salaries very quickly. Regular employees did not get that benefit.

Why do lesser paid City employees and part-time staff have to be the ones to continue making sacrifices? Mayor Schaaf is following the Jerry Brown method. We know how Jerry screwed California in order to create a huge reserve that no one can touch. Mayor Schaaf appears to want to imitate his model of governing.

If Mayor Schaaf is genuinely concerned about her employees she could set a better example if she made major sacrifices too by cutting her own salary and administrative staff. She needs to feel the pain the majority of City employees are going through, but how can she when she and her administration make six figure salaries? That's way more than the average City worker makes.

She can always go home and live more than comfortably while City workers worry how they will make ends meet and continue to live in the City they serve.

Re: “The Laney College Opposition

The article doesn't get into A's owner John Fisher of Gap, Inc, who has ties to the charter school movement like Betsy DeVos and the Walton Family (Walmart), and his interest to privatize colleges. He is also interested in developing the area in order to increase rents and drive out low income communities of color. He is also anti-union and anti-environmental so he really could care less about the stadium creating so much pollution (light, sound, smog, trash) that will most likely drive protected birds and wildlife away or kill them. Selling Laney College and its surrounding property off to build a stadium would be the death knell of Oakland's Laney College as a public school, Lake Merritt, and neighbors who include Chinatown and other ethnic communities. If you follow the money behind the A's scam you will realize that stadium will be Oakland's biggest black eye if it comes to fruition.

Re: “New Ballpark Could Devastate Lake Merritt's Birds

The As are no longer a community team. They are a sports entertainment corporation willing to destroy Oakland's downtown community and Lake Merritt for the almighty dollar. I'd rather say goodbye to them than to the wildlife at Lake Merritt, which is the crowning jewel for Oakland. The A's stadium if built nearby will definitely kill our Lake, its birds and the wildlife there. In addition, low income communities of color will be displaced again because of the changes the new construction will bring.

The As shipped in non Oakland fans from other cities to claim their stake for the stadium at the Peralta Board meeting this Fall. Then this week their propaganda team at the Oakland Chamber of Commerce claimed 62% of Oakland voters support the stadium. I wonder who they actually surveyed? Definitely not the residents who live in the area.

No,this stadium will be a big black eye for Oakland. I'd rather say bye to the A's than to the birds and Mother Nature in our City. All the billions of dollars the A's project will come in for Oakland in a decade is simply cold, hard cash without a soul for those wanting a piece of the pie. It won't even help those people who will get displaced, including the birds and lives inside the Lake. If Lake Merritt is destroyed in the process due to the A's stadium, Oakland will not be the winner here at all.

Re: “Oakland Councilmembers Accuse Mayor Schaaf of 'Bait and Switch' With Soda Tax Revenue

This is such a Jerry Brown, mod-Dem tactic and Mayor Schaaf was trained by Jerry too. When mod-Dems pull these kinds of stunts, people don't trust Democrats. This distrust is one reason why the country wound up with #45 in the White House.

That sugar tax advisory board needs to be set up ASAP, and not with Ms.Schaaf's hand picks, which tend to undermine what the purpose of what these boards are supposed to do.

Re: “Online Poll Attacks Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan, Claims False Endorsements for Peggy Moore

Supporters of the current mayor, who represent big corporate development money are obviously trying to get the people who are more progressive out of the running, out of elected seats and away from appointed positions. Their pockets for funds are almost bottomless when compared to grassroots community. This is happening in District 5 too with the council and school board candidates. Oakland 's soul is being sold, but many voters in the hills , who are starry-eyed over this mayor, don't realize what is going on here and will vote our interests away this election .

Re: “Residents Complain AC Transit Turning Downtown Oakland Park Into De Facto Bus Terminal

AC Transit provides a much needed service to the community. Bus drivers need a place where they can take a break and use a restroom too. Do residents want them to go in the bushes or on the street instead? Shorestein Pit is not a solution for this problem either. When these resident car drivers' cars break down, they will wish they had public transportation nearby.

Re: “Oakland's Only Nigerian Restaurant Makes Way for a New Beer Garden

Rumbo's former location on Park Blvd. needs a new restaurant in the Glenview. That spot is vacant.
