Comedy, Drama
Kit Kittredge: An American Girl is an earnest, G-rated adventure-drama that explores economic hardships during the Great Depression via a journalistically inclined sleuth who refuses to see anything but the good in people — even the much-maligned “hobo.” Abigail Breslin plays the titular character from the American Girl doll line, and should inspire her fair share of young girls to aspire to model themselves after Kit. Despite all it has going for it, the film suffers from being neither fish nor fowl: in the first act it’s a drama, during the second it’s mostly a comedy, and during the third it’s a Nancy Drew mystery. If the filmmakers had made up their minds, the movie might have turned into a family classic (101 min.).
