Kishi Bashi

When: Sat., May 17, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $19.50
Kishi Bashi is the pseudonym of classically trained violinist K Ishibashi, a former touring member of Of Montreal and Regina Spektor’s band who makes wildly joyous, experimental pop music by looping violin — as well as his own bright, soaring voice — into a kaleidoscope of sound. Every song on his debut album, 2012’s 151a, brims with a lightness that’s almost blinding. On “Manchester,” he sings, I haven’t felt this alive in a long time. In a less talented composer’s hands, that lyric could easily come off as cliché. But Ishibashi’s folksy songwriting sounds utterly genuine and complements the emotions he expresses lyrically. Ishibashi released his sophomore album, Lighght, earlier this week to rave reviews by outlets such as NPR, which awarded him “Best New Artist” in 2012. See him perform on Saturday at The Fillmore (1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco)
