Kirk Franklin

When: Wed., Aug. 14, 7 & 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $45-$85
Gospel music may have seemed old and out of touch to the younger generation a few years ago, but then Chance infused his third mixtape, Coloring Book, with it in 2016 and it went crazy big. Now Chance has taken a step back from gospel. Kirk Franklin on the other hand has been tried and true. He calls forth the sound of Southern churches from generations past, while filtering it through a modern R&B lens. His career started in 1992 with his group Kirk Franklin and The Family, then he went solo in 2000 and was dubbed the “Urban King of Gospel” by Variety in 2003. His latest album, and twelfth solo outing, Long, Live, Love, was released earlier this year and explores the various subgenres and moods within gospel. He moves between them with the skill of a professional and talks about a variety of topics like hatred and idolatry and coping with death.
