King Khan and the Shrines

When: Sun., Oct. 13, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $16
King Khan and the Shrines are known for putting on a wild, theatrical show: A scantily clad Khan flings himself across the stage while dancers with pom-poms swirl around him and a horn section grooves in the background. Idle No More, the band’s first album in six years, sounds as if the Shrines are on an extended psychedelic space jam: It successfully meshes the intensity of garage rock, the joy of gospel, and the groove of funk. It’s cliché to say that a band doesn’t sound like any other, but it’s hard not to feel that way about King Khan and the Shrines. Listening to the Berlin-based outfit is like being on a nonstop magic-carpet ride into the hazy Seventies. See if they live up to their reputation when they perform at Slim’s (333 11th St., San Francisco), with HellShovel and Slipping Into Darkness.
