Kid Sister and DJ Shortee

When: Sat., March 31, 10 p.m. 2012
Price: $12-$18

Perhaps the most salient feature of Doug Pray's 2001 feature-length documentary, Scratch, was the conspicuous absence of female DJs -- but for one. Shannon Bruno, aka DJ Shortee, is widely regarded as one of the top turntablists in the world. Her résumé includes a solo album, a battle record, the coveted "Power Mixer" title from Los Angeles radio station Power 106, and a series of pedagogical videos in which she imparts lessons on the art of scratching. She'll appear this week with Chicago-based rapper and former Kanye West collaborator Kid Sister, in a celebration to mark the ten-year anniversary of local B-girl dance collective Sisterz of the Underground. Fittingly, the event will also feature a dance battle for $200, with veteran dancers Tiffany Bong, Pandora, and Crykit judging. Add to that an art gallery with live painting by RubyOne; music sets by Butterscotch, La Femme Deadly Venoms, and TOAST; a vendor fair; a DJ showcase featuring Pony P, Green B, 13 Moons, and Jeanine DaFeen; and manicures by Lila. That's right, at this anniversary party you're free to battle, or get your nails did. At Public Works (161 Erie St., San Francisco) on Saturday, Mar. 31. 10 p.m., $12-$18.
