Kev Choice Ensemble

When: Mon., Oct. 26, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $14

Kev Choice didn't invent the hip-hop band phenomenon, but he definitely ennobled it. From his beginnings as a sometime-emcee for Geechi Taylor's jazz group, Baby Daddy, to his high-profile gig directing an all-Bay Area ensemble for Lauryn Hill, Choice has continually searched for newer, better ways to align his jazz and rap careers. His current ensemble features a phenomenal horn section with Taylor on trumpet and Howard Wiley on sax, plus backup singer Viveca Hawkins and a bass player with a great pocket. The group started out playing high-energy after-hours shows at the Black New World Gallery, and quickly became a staple in the local club scene. Choice has an interesting approach, in that he often makes instrumental versions of famous hip-hop samples (a post-post-post modern tactic, since those samples originated on Seventies soul records), and sometimes combines rock, funk, and soul styles in an asymmetrical way.  It makes for a captivating show. Kev Choice Ensemble plays OaklandYoshi's (510 Embarcadero) on Monday, Oct. 26. 8 p.m., $14.
