Re: “The Buses From Hell

Although I have never made use of the Eastbay Transportation System, mainly because it's overpriced and inefficient, I can't help but feel that the author of this article is being overly dramatic. The article starts with the sentence " Pamela Daniels lost her leg to a Van Hool bus." When I read that, I thought that this lady's leg had been amputated because of a malfunction of the bus. Turns out that the injury was due do human error! She was stepping on one of the elvated platforms to get to her seat, when the driver stepped on the gas and got back on the road. Pamela was thrown to the floor and the fall caused an old wound to open up. This, in turn, let to infection and amputation of her leg. Am I the only one here who would blame the bus driver, instead of bus??

I think the Eastbay Transportation System has other, more serious issues, to deal with than the layout of buses. Tickets are overpriced, buses don't run on time, and there are not nearly enough bus lines to even call it a transportation system or network. That's what you get for privatizing public transport!

In comparison, these same Van Hool buses are used in Hasselt, a provincial town in Belgium. There, the bus system gets rave reviews. Why? Because traveling by bus is easy, efficient and free of charge. All buses are wheelchair accessible and have their own lanes. It's makes people want to leave their car at home and actually use the bus.

How do I know? I'm from Belgium and have made use of the busses there, to go to school and work. I couldn't help but comment on this article because I feel it's rediculious to blame the buses, when in fact it's the whole bus system that's inefficient.
