Re: “Thursday Must Reads: First Fridays Rocked By Theft and Lawsuit; County Wants Oakland to Buy Its Share of Coliseum

RE: Story #1 - UPDATES/CORRECTIONS submitted August 5, 2015 by KONO Board President Joseph Jung

Update: The Oakland First Fridays event won the BEST of 2015 award from SF Magazine
Correction: although at the last event there were two instances of theft, the losses were minor, given the scope and history of the event—$948.00 in cash and about $1200.00 in audio equipment. Changes in security practices have already been put in place to address both issues. These events are not “rampant” which means “flourishing or spreading unchecked,” they are isolated, not part of any observable longer-term pattern. They are not going unchecked.
Correction: the office was secure with an alarm, volunteers do not have access to the office if staff are not present.
Correction: inventory of the music equipment is conducted each month.
Correction: the December 2014 and February 2015 events were cancelled due to rain. The choice was made not to have an event in January 2015 to avoid having event preparation work interfere with the holidays of staff and volunteers (the First Friday of January was on the 2nd).
Correction: the monthly event expenses are $12,000, not counting OPD and other in-kind services. Kidder’s sponsorship development was separate from the event cost.
Correction: Gate donations vary widely from month to month. They are one piece of the funding strategy along with several other sources, including art vendor and food vendor fees, sponsors, city support, which is very helpful and by no means extravagant, in-kind support from KONO not covered by First Friday income (including a large number of staff, Board and KONO volunteer hours.) After low gate income for a couple of months, donations bounced back in July.
Correction: Moon did not question Godinez's handling of OaKFF money. Gate donations are not a consistent source of income, each month is different even across the year. Gate donations increased once again in July 2015.
Correction: The E.D's increase in hours to produce OakFF was authorized by KONO Board, on June 8, 2015 at the Board of Director’s meeting.
Correction: After ending the contract with Kidder, KONO brought the event production in-house which meant it became the responsibility of the Executive Director with the help of a part-time assistant. The KONO Board was aware that Godinez's hours of work on the OakFF event were beyond the 35 hours per week and that she would be compensated for her time from the OakFF account. Minutes Executive Committee, June 1, 2015.
Correction: Moon's resignation followed multiple conversations brought on by the Executive Committee, Board President and the Executive Director regarding Moon's conduct which was non-collaborative, combative and often obstructive to the good work that KONO was trying to do.
Correction: The Executive Committee authorized Godinez to take on the extra hours to produce the OakFF event. The event coordination has been taken in-house in an effort to determine the production needs and reevaluate the staffing needs for the event."
Update: A police report was filed for the money theft on July 30, 2015.
