Kataklysm and All Shall Perish

When: Mon., March 7, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $16, $20

Even among the most loyal metal fans, "deathcore" can be a challenging genre. Though it shares many of the same qualities as death metal (the drop tuning, the chunky riffs, the double-bass, and the ever-present "cookie monster" vocals), it also includes lots of fast, technical playing; big breakdowns; palm-muted riffs; and the occasional "pig squeal" -- a vocalization that sounds like -- you guessed it. Which may partially explain why Oaklanddeathcore band All Shall Perish has gained a world-wide following, but in the metal-saturated Bay Area, couldn't pack more than a couple hundred people at the Oakland Metro as of a few years ago. Still, as far as the genre is concerned, All Shall Perish sits head and shoulders above its (mostly American) peers. Besides its inventive songwriting, the band also understands the importance of a good hook. Its last album, Awaken the Dreamers, was more polished and featured more virtuoso-style guitar-playing than its prior two efforts, but also contained the band's most brutal minutes committed to tape: "Stabbing to Purge Dissimulation." Guitarist Ben Orum says the band's forthcoming album will feature more "down-and-dirty grooves." Expect to hear plenty of it when the band plays an all-ages show at Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Monday, Mar. 7, with Kataklysm, Decrepit Birth, and Conducting from the Grave. 8 p.m., $16, $20.
