“How Does It Feel” came out in 2015, but it’s still a feel-good hit worthy of your 2019 playlists. That song was Oakland-bred Kamaiyah Johnson’s debut single with just the right amount of Bay Area pizazz, a dash of ’90s inspiration, and of course, “ill yaya” to spice it all up. In the following years, Kamiyah dropped two mixtapes, A Good Night in the Ghetto in 2016 and Before I Wake in 2017, which both deliver positive and nothing-can-bring-me-down vibes from a woman coming up. “Successful,” a buoyant track with an even more satisfying yacht club visual accompanying it, plays like an unbothered PSA to the haters left behind. Even as a feature — like on YG’s “Why You Always Hatin’” — the 23-year-old’s potential can’t help but radiate through. Kamaiyah will perform at The New Parish as part of the venue’s string of 10-year anniversary shows.
