Re: “Merritt College Nursing Woes

I also had a friend that was struggling and didn't pass her first go around. She was able to retake the test and did just fine. She now works in a MedSurg Unit at UCSF.

She says not to give up. She says chalk it up as a bad experience and grow. Her fundamentals class was spread throughout the whole semester and clinicals started the first day. She's actually heard about this program and tried to deter me from applying. She was surprised that everything was base off three tests when I told her. She says it takes a lot more than passing a test to be a good nurse. She said her program examined individuals more in the clinical setting. She said this truely determines an individuals capabilities and this is where people should be getting kicked out.

Although this was a horrible experiences I'm happy to move on. Every thought of still being in the program makes me absolutely ill. Its a good thing I backed myself up, which I recommend to everyone still in the program. I just received my letter to be interview for the Masters Entry Program at UCSF. I've talked to a few friends that just started. They said its a lot of work but very organized and positive. I'm not sure why I applied to Merritt it seemed so cheap. I guess thats why I applied and thats what I got.

Toughlove -

There is issues at this school. Especially for the class of 2010. I'm sorry if this is your only educational experience in your life. That explains your attitude, arrogant comments, and blindness to the issues at this school. I'm sorry but my mother is a nurse. The nursing profession like every other profession is hard. You act like your gods gift to the world. Your just a nurse! Its not that hard, I'm sorry. I work with nurses all day in the ICU. I've seen what they do and I understand what it takes to be a nurse. I have a four year degree and plenty of work experience outside and inside of healthcare. Other careers are just as grueling and guess what you don't have the pleasure of a union. So to sit there and belittle me and tell my to look into a medical assistant , dental assistant, and pharm tech program is crazy. This to me just sums up this programs attitude.

To all the potential nursing students applying to schools do you want to deal with people like this?

Do want to attend a school that is underfunded?

Do you want to become a nursing professional with such an attitude?

Do want to risk wasting time and money on a program that will drop you on a dime?

Do want to take tests that have errors on them and teachers unwilling to admit to error?

Do want to attend a program were the teachers don't reply back to your emails?

Do want to attend a program were you have to beg for more material to help you succeed?

Do you want to attend a program were teachers show up 45 minutes late to lecture?

Do you want to attend a program were your instructors have never taught before in their lives?

Do you want to attend a program with no lab materials?

Do you want to attend a program with a 30% retention rate?

I'm sorry but the list goes on and on. In my mind, the people that stay in this program have no other choice or educational background. So if you want to put up with all of this go right ahead. But my advice is go to another program that is organized and doesn't have such an attitude problem. If your a well rounded student and those of you who are understand there is standards for institutions. The staff is a bunch of burnt out cronies that can't seen to get organized. To be honest they remind me of the bush administration. Don't let these oakland lifers ruin your confidence and tell you to look at a medical assistant program. You know who you are and you know what your capable of. My only goal is to inform incoming students about what is going here in Oakland. And yes I will be handing out fliers this upcoming orientation and I hope everyone else will join my protest to inform incoming classes.
