Comedy drama
Actor Ellen Page (Hard Candy) does everything but the cast’s laundry as a philosophical, headstrong, mouthy high-school girl who decides to go ahead and have the baby she conceived with her cross-country runner pal down the block (Michael Cera) -- but to give the kid up for adoption to a pair of loathsome yuppies. Writer Diablo Cody, aka Brook Busey-Hunt, loads the proceedings with the kind of hyper dialogue only heard in PG-13 teenage empowerment comedies like this one –- but Ms. Page defies the obstacles and turns in a performance that actually grows before our eyes. Fine support by Allison Janney, J.K. Simmons, and Jason Bateman. Directed with not a hair out of place by Jason Reitman (Thank You for Smoking) (91 min.).
