Meryl Streep comically chomps and whinnies her way through the kitchens of Paris as foodie icon Julia Child, on a mission to make classical French cuisine popular in 1950s America. The weaker half of Nora Ephron’s lightheaded parallel drama finds contemporary blogger Julie Powell (Amy Adams) paying tribute to Child by cooking every one of her recipes — so what? Streep looks as if she’s having fun, but Adams’ girl-next-door cuteness shows signs of wear and tear. The film’s saving grace is Stanley Tucci as Child’s husband, a man half her size — his character actually manages to connect the concepts of “Julia Child” and “sex.” The hammy, high-calorie screenplay is by writer-director Ephron, adapting books by Child and Powell. Too buttery by half (123 min.).
