Judy Wexler’s State of the Art Songs

When: Sat., June 22, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $20 - $25
Judy Wexler, a conspicuously smart jazz singer based in Los Angeles, has long distinguished herself with a repertoire laden with songs gleaned far outside the pages of the American Songbook. But she’s outdone herself on her consistently rewarding album Crowded Heart (Jewel City Jazz), a project that focuses on material created by estimable colleagues such as Luciana Souza, Lorraine Feather, Norma Winstone, Kurt Elling, Sinne Eeg, and René Marie. Arranged and co-produced by piano great Alan Pasqua, the project is a treasure map that should launch countless similar quests for contemporary gems. Returning to her Bay Area perch, Wexler plays Oakland’s Sound Room on Saturday with veteran pianist Keith Saunders, bassist Adam Gay, and drummer Akira Tana, a supremely musical accompanist who’s toured and recorded with jazz legends such as Zoot Sims, Art Farmer, Jimmy Heath, and J.J. Johnson.
