Re: “Understanding North Korea

Although I'm late in chiming in on this important topic, I would like to add to the chorus of critical voices and lend my support to the truly courageous work of Christine Ahn and other Bay Area activists for peace on the Korean peninsula, and to commend Wentz for shining a light on the progressive Korean American community who, for so long, have been marginalized and red-baited by such orientalist crusaders like Stanton. I was in Korea as a media activist during the tragic murder of 2 schoolgirls crushed by U.S. army tanks. This horrific incident sparked a tidal wave of resistance against U.S. hegemony in the region; it was beautiful to see faces young and wrinkled hold candles in the windy night, not just for peace and justice on the southern half of the peninsula, but for the entire Korean peninsula. And this is an unrelenting movement that overseas Koreans, such as Ahn, have long contributed to, and will continue to contribute to, long after hateful, uninformed voices for empire have been cast aside. Peaceful and just reunification is an arduous road filled with multiple possibilities, but with activists like Ahn and journalists like Wentz, it will be a road paved with bread and roses. Or kimchi and makkoli. A fermented revolution to drown the sorrows of empire. Keep on keepin on.
