Forty-year-old Joshua Redman is one of the biggest stars to come up under Berkeley High Jazz Ensemble director Charles Hamilton. The son of sax legend Dewey Redman, he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 1991 and cut a record with bassist Charlie Haden and the late drummer Billy Higgins a couple years later. Over the years he generated a huge cult of fandom and a copious discography (his latest release, Compass, just came out on Nonesuch). On record he's crisp and elegant; seen live, he's a monster. Redman plays OaklandYoshi's (510 Embarcadero) Apr. 1-5, with a trio featuring SFJAZZ Collective bassist Matt Penman and famed Brooklyn drummer Greg Hutchinson. $18-$30. Yoshis.com
