Jonathan Mann

When: Tue., July 7, 9 p.m. and Tue., July 14, 9 p.m. 2009
Price: free

Those who followed Jonathan Mann's Song-a-Day campaign may recall his wry critiques of waterboarding, media spin, Miss California, swine flu hysteria, Timothy Geithner (When I listen to him, all I hear is "blah blahblah"), and the desecration of newspapers. A former video intern for the East Bay Express, Mann is a multifaceted artist, capable of shuffling words as easily as he chops videotape. He conceptualizes, shoots, edits, and scores all of his own videos, so that each is its own self-contained work of art. Go back into the Express archives and you'll find him speculating on the realness (or falsity) of Miss California's boobs, regurgitating the words of John Yoo's torture memos (in song), and quarterbacking a cast of alt-weekly journalists in "How to Save Newspapers: The Musical." Now he's one of the most prodigious political songwriters on YouTube. Jonathan Mann performs two sets on Tuesday, July 14 at the Uptown Night Club (1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland), as part of a month-long residency. 9 p.m., free. RockCookieBottom.com
