Re: “Alameda Landlord Who Evicted 33 Families Slams Councilmembers

"Carpetbagger" landlord Matt Sridhar epitomizes what is wrong with the (so-called "free market") status quo in Alameda. He is welcome to leave Alameda, as far as I am concerned--we will be a better community once he and his ilk are gone.

Re: “Racial Profiling Via

I find it sad, indeed, that people of one skin color seem more likely to categorize--and report to the police--people of another skin color. Especially calling OPD with such incomplete and useless descriptions. (OPD needs more concrete details than racial group or "hoodie" if you want them to reduce crime.)

I am a white, married, Christian man who is 5'7" tall, balding, overweight, owns a couple of hoodies, and lives in Alameda. Would I be reported for walking my dog or walking with a friend in one of these Oakland Hills neighborhoods? It would be logical for someone in the Dimond District who reports "strange" people of color walking in his/her neighborhood to also report a strange white guy doing the same thing, would it not? Would I also be threatened with being shot simply for occupying (walking on) a public sidewalk in a different city? I would hope that if I were there legally and not engaged in illegal behavior that I would be free to walk or breathe while white...

If the Oakland Nextdoor residents who constantly report strangers in their neighborhoods are *actually* reporting unusual activity -- versus reporting normal human beings who are neighbors and are legitimately engaged in walking, calling on neighbors door to door selling security systems, etc.--and doing so without racial bias, then I should not be targeted or reported. But neither should the people of color who actually *live* there.

I will be more watchful for racial profiling here in Alameda Next-door conversations....

Re: “Updated: Libby Schaaf Wins Oakland Mayor's Race

Congratulations to Libby Schaaf. I wish I could be as happy about Alameda's mayoral choice as I am about Oakland's, but I fear that my own city just stepped into chaos.

Re: “An Alameda Power Play?

This EBX article uses poor sources and is inaccurate in both approach and specifics.

I agree with Mark irons: the previous council majority and Interim City Manager Ann Marie Gallant (whose name you misspelled) took the City of Alameda on a path of unjustified obfuscation and persecution (of Lena Tam in particular). The current council majority is making markedly different - and better, IMHO - decisions on behalf of greater transparency and accountability. The howls of protest from a small but vocal minority need to be understood in this context.

The City of Alameda, far from being in serious trouble, is beginning to dig itself out of a recently-dug and deep hole. The new majority (Gilmore, Bonta, and Tam) and Acting City Manager Lisa Goldman are working hard to reverse
the damage done under Ann Marie Gallant's administration:…

I hope the EBX will get its next story on Alameda politics right - we already have too many partial and inaccurate news stories on and about the island...
