Action, Comedy
Busy British funny man Rowan Atkinson makes the most of his writers’ sure-handed spoof of spy movies, with more pointedly silly misadventures of the title MI7 agent, who glides through a string of deadly predicaments all over the globe without mussing his hair or breaking a sweat, even though he’s a world-class klutz. This time it’s about a plot to assassinate the Chinese premier. The screenplay — by Hamish McColl and William Davies based on characters created by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade — not only zings James Bond but also the Bourne films (a nice parkour parody) and John Le Carré, as when English is dismissed by a snooty colleague as “a jumped-up grammar-school nobody.” But without Atkinson’s ridiculous face and comic timing, none of it would mean anything. He’s priceless, no matter how many Mr. Bean episodes he’s made. Directed by Oliver Parker. (101 min.)
