John Stowell-Michael Zilber Group

When: Tue., June 14, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $10-$14

Vancouver-raised saxophonist Michael Zilber isn't just a great composer and improviser. He's also known for recognizing and cultivating talent. Since moving to the Bay Area, he took a faculty position at the Jazzschool Institute in Berkeley, where he leads several groups. He also runs the jazz studies program at Los Medanos College. In recent years Zilber began collaborating with guitarist John Stowell, another well-reputed musician (and clinician) with a very refined sense of harmony. Their new album, Shot Through With Beauty,is packed with original compositions that show the amount of scholarship between the two. One could imagine they both spent a lot of time listening to parts of the ECM catalogue, but they also do a great job of listening to each other. They'll play at Yoshi's San Francisco (1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco) on Tuesday, June 14. 8 p.m., $10, $14. Yoshis.com
