Re: “Newsom and Who Else?

Wow, didn't know pit bulls were a deal-breaker for some voters. Fascinating.

Re: “Monday's Briefing: Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Attacks Councilmember Desley Brooks; Comey Attacks Trump; Trump Attacks Syria

Mr. Johnson, I've never been a fan of Libby Schaaf, but I think it's unfair to judge her ICE warning an empty 'verbal gesture'. If it saved even one person from ICE detention it was more than that.

Mr. Montague: "the former U.S. attorney is working on a pro-bono basis."

Re: “The University of Nuclear Bombs

Excellent article. It's worth noting the University's first radiation lab & cyclotron were housed in and adjacent to Le Conte Hall.

Re: “First, BART Came for the Homeless, Then for the Artwork

BART are philistines and their police force murders people. That's all the 'balance' necessary.

Re: “Oakland City Council Should Censure Desley Brooks

There are plenty of Oakland community activists who could 'push the most difficult and anti-racist policies' without being an abusive bully (which Brooks has been as long as she's been in the limelight) who attacks small, elderly people (even tough, fiery ones like Elaine Brown).

Brooks is very smart - and has used her intellect to ride roughshod over some of the less bright bulbs on the City Council - but she has gone too far this time. Hopefully the voters of her district have seen enough.

Re: “Sideshows Spin Donuts Around Police Over Thanksgiving Weekend in Oakland

To the best of my knowledge, SRL events were never sanctioned and were probably illegal (though I also have vague memories of attending one of their shows at a middle school playground, so perhaps I am wrong on this point). They also exposed the audience to danger (sometimes extreme danger) - I recall massive explosions going off at another event as the audience cowered beneath an extremely echoey freeway overpass.

Sideshows scratch the same itch as custom car shows, demolition derbies, and drag racing. It might be possible to 'convert' a portion of participants to a sanctioned and regulated sporting event, but there will always be people for whom the danger and the illegality are the main attraction. Consequently, there's no law enforcement response that will 'kill' sideshows: they will eventually peter out when audiences and participants move on to the next big thrill, whatever that will be.
