John Sayles Free Staff Pick

When: Tue., Feb. 25, 7 p.m. 2020
John Sayles is perhaps best known for his offbeat cult films: Passion Fish, Lone Star, Men With Guns, The Brother from Another Planet, Eight Men Out. But before he directed his first film, Return of the Seacaucus 7, Sayles had already written two novels: Union Dues and the odd and unsettlingly satire Pride of the Bimbos. He’s got a knack for the format. Sayles just released his fifth novel, Yellow Earth, a character study about the discovery of oil in Yellow Earth, North Dakota, near the Three Nations Indian Reservation. The book is set just before the Standing Rock protests, but it harkens the fiery passion and resistance of the Native people as they are confronted with uncaring and destructive big business as they try to protect the land from being sucked dry. It’s a tense political novel, with nuanced characters and incredibly visual dialogue.
