John Mellencamp

When: Sat., Aug. 2, 7:30 p.m. 2008
Price: $39.50-$99.50

Between Indiana native John Mellencamp and Louisiana chanteuse Lucinda Williams, you'd be hard-pressed to find a double-bill tapped in more to the pulse of heartland music. Known for his populist leanings, recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Mellencamp, (whose arrival was way overdue), is using his recently released, T-Bone Burnett-produced project Life Death Love and Freedom to offer commentary on his mortality and the national political climate. Williams continues down a more personal path with last year's Hal Willner-produced West, an honest effort resonating with the pain of a toxic relationship and the passing of a parent that's helped her ascend to the rare strata of an artist akin to modern-day Dylan. Catch this Americana-leaning duo at the Greek Theatre (Gayley Rd. at Hearst Ave., Berkeley) on Saturday, August 2. 7:30 p.m., $39.50-$99.50.
