Re: “These Comedians Are Shaking Up the Stand-Up Scene

This is such an important piece of work that these females are producing. Comedy is a fantastic avenue to bring attention to social issues as so many male comics - the better ones - have done. When George Carlin and Richard Pryor tackled tough subjects for their audiences, they were equally shunned and applauded, but they were noticed. Their routines are legendary now and revered. These females should be given the same attention by critiquing and gaining a lot of press whenever they present their work. They are cutting-edge wonderful and deserve a lot more focus on larger stages and arenas (dare I say a regular spot on Comedy Central?) There's hella more room on tv than simply having Mindy Kalling's presence and the constant self deprecation that has become the common landscape for female comics. (Note: Don't get me wrong: I love me some Mindy, but she's only as 'cutting-edge' as mainstream tv allows her to be. It's not that long ago that Margaret Cho tried similar topics and was quickly booted from this male dominated avenue - so I applaud the shit out of her work).
There's this ridiculous standard of half-glass-emptiness about female comics and what the public either desires or can tolerate. Comedy clubs won't book more than like one female comic on the same bill or allow them to be hired more than one time a month - or year. The club owners claim that they won't fill the seats like male comics do. It's the same old boy's mentality that keeps the culture as small minded as Lakshminarayanan makes fun of when she dares to cover the topic of attending M.I.T. The culture-at-large will not heal without allowing their type of brave material to shake things up. It's kinda that simple. 'The Formula' is one cure for this ill we all suffer from: misogyny. It is the leading cause of death for all of us socially, psychically, and for many females - literally.
Thank you for writing this piece Sam Levin! Good on you for taking notice as well as *getting it*.

Re: “Coming Out in High School

Interesting observation from Portland and guess what? Not too region specific, although this phenom IS found more on our wasted coast. The Bay Area seems to be 'Ground Zero' for this activity where being a Butch is becoming more rare and trying to pass as a man has become like the latest fashion statement. Trouble is is that it's causing lots of damage to especially the younger generation of more naturally masculinized females. The social pressure to go under the knife for breast removal (permanent people!) and self administer the very powerful drug (oops! I just called it what it really is!), uh....'hormone', testosterone, is tremendous. Since suicide rates are up in Lesbian teens, it's a safe guess that this pressure is in large part to blame.
The only things you need to do are the breast removal, taking "T" on a regular basis & choosing a boy name and you're 'good-to-go' in beginning to act like you're just another 'guy'. (Never mind that 99.9% of people still recognize you as a female anyway who's trying to pass. Somehow, taking testosterone doesn't really eliminate those darn hips-n-ass that are naturally so female!) Most seem to think that a little facial hair acts as enough of a distraction. I suppose if you live in the Midwest it might work. But not here. Please.
So, no real surprise that the testosterone-popping, gals-trying-to-pass-as-gay-boys are getting spotted so easily. The gay boys who are into SM here in the Bay Area have complained about the fakers on more than one occasion, but that damn drug is just so intoxicating...who else wants to have sex 24/7 but gay men?! So....we're not only seeing a loss of Butch females but an increase in non-bio gay "bois", boys.
Like I said to a gay male friend of mine two years ago when he spotted this going on, "What's the matter with a little heterosexual activity every once in a while?!" He didn't laugh. You see, the FTM's do not do anything to alter their lower genitalia. They still have vaginas. Just like Thomas Beattie. Remember the 'miracle' "pregnant man"?
So, if you're a gay man and find yourself attracted to what you think is another gay man....just make sure you ask 'Hym" to pull "Hys" pants off and show you the goods before proceeding. "S/he's" probably just another horny female in disguise ;)
