@JudyGallman Why aren't you (allegedly) letting Kathleen rehire Bea? And no, I havent talked to Kathleen. But, your staff leaks like a sieve because things still have not been righted, distrust runs high. Are they lying or misinformed? If so, I truly apologize. Care to go on record with your thinking on all these EBX matters so we/they can understand? They are afraid for their jobs and the company's health if they speak up, still. Do u care? One suggestion: hire a mediator or get professional HR help. Another: try letting your staff do their jobs so long as they are within their budget parameters and not breaking any laws-that was working better. Who's in charge @RobertGammon?

@robertgammon In a personal facebook post, Steve Buel claims there is "a lot of score settling going on." (Your wife liked this post.) I'd like to address this assertion publicly - in case he's referencing my going public.

If I wanted to capitalize on Steve's bad behavior, there are so many other times I could have gone public where it would benefit me. Like right when it happened. Like just after it happened when working with Steve was miserable. Like when it was between Hal (my old, close friend) and Steve on who would get to run the paper some years ago. Like when Steve was going to come back last year to become a managing owner (and I knew I'd likely be terminated if it went that way). When the Express did a big #metoo story after Steve became managing owner of the paper. All would have been better times for me/my personal interests/job happiness/job security, and trust me, it crossed my mind at each of those moments.

But I didn't, and that was wrong. I was embarrassed, worried about my job, disassociated/paralyzed from too many life traumas, and I calculated it was best for the paper and its people. Most (sadly) of all, I didn't make it public in order to protect Steve and his wife. I gain NOTHING - no pleasure from "score settling." no financial gain, no nothing - by speaking now, other than the satisfaction of doing the right thing (albeit late) for the people in your employment (or that were). -- Jody Colley

So, Judy (Steve's wife), who defended Steve's editorial director stance, removing stories, use of the N word, and that white people were discriminated against in the editorials gets a free pass? No sensitivity training? No disciplinary action? No questioning of her ability to be editor or owner? Noted.

Also, it'd be great if you're going to mention Steve's characterization of my assault as a "congratulatory kiss", that you also counter with my statement that congratulatory kisses are not okay (and probably don't involve tongue or prior sexual propositions) -- nor did he apologize.

Robert Gammon is Steve's close friend for many years, housemate/tenant, "commender"-in-chief, and has nearly no newspaper business operations experience. He was really the best person in the country Steve could tap for this critical job during a crisis period? (IMO, Steve will likely be running the paper by proxy.) What was Bob's position and involvement in the chain of Steve/Judy events, subsequent staff and freelancer exodus, and sorry-not sorry period? The board and investors are good with this?

Ridiculous. No, This is not putting the Express, its staff or community first.

More questions: Will Steve still draw a salary (or otherwise Judy get a raise)? Is anyone who is left in protest getting their jobs re-offered? Are the removed articles being reposted without edits?

I hope someday (very soon), things are truly righted and the community rallies behind the Express. I sure will with all my available resources. Until then, hard pass. -- Jody Colley

@WillHarper My long (23+ years) in publishing great alternative weeklies ended without proper recognition. Let's be adults. If I had used the N word or assaulted an employee, it wouldn't matter how many awards, how many careers launched, how many friends made... I wouldn't deserve to be publisher. This... isn't complicated.

@NateSeltenrich People are complicated. They can be amazing in some aspects of their life... the best of the best even. And yet, make mistakes significant enough to have real consequences. Like you, Steve has earned my respect in some ways, and at the same time, I think it's unacceptable for a company owner to use the N word or to have assaulted ME. If I can hold both ideas as true simultaneously, I hope you and others can as well. Note: the reason you didn't hear about it while working at EBX is because, unfortunately, I didn't talk about it. Isn't that a shame? Finally, I think if you looked more closely, you'll see that accepting responsibility for mistakes (which is an attribute you assign to him) is precisely what's been missing. And finally, chalking up sexual assault as a run-of-the-mill mistake just doesn't cut it. Not even close.

@stephenbuel You state that you gave me a congratulatory kiss then immediately apologized. When does anyone kiss a coworker after a success? And do they use tongue? Also, as KQED reported, it wasnt the only inappropriate act of a sexual nature toward me documented in your written warning. Finally, I dont remember an apology. What I remember is that my only ask at the time was to never talk about it again. And yet, after you got disciplined, you came to my office angry and defiant. And despite your victim blaming, I refused to apologize for your getting caught. By the way, you got caught because you were cavalier about the matter, saying around the office that you had inappropriately kissed me! Perhaps you should think long and hard about commenting further. I dont enjoy any of this, or having to pblicly correct you. But as a good journalist ought to know, sunshine is the best disinfectant. Not good enough. Your close friend and tenant/house sharing partner, Robert Gammon, is not the solution. Your continued ownership of the paper is not a solution.
