Biography, Drama
Actor Ashton Kutcher, a dead ringer for Apple guru Steve Jobs, does a fine job playing the mercurial tech icon. The screenplay – written by Matt Whiteley for director Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) – does not hesitate to portray Jobs’ dark side as he navigates the cutthroat hardware business world. The supporting cast, especially Josh Gad as collaborator Steve Wozniak and J.K. Simmons as a crafty lawyer, works hard and stays on key. So why is watching this dramatized bio such a chore? Maybe because it runs through Jobs’ life in standard chronological order, and otherwise behaves like any other “captains of industry” tale, with a distinct lack of the necessary “magic.” Or maybe we’re just sick of hearing about brilliant-nerd masters of the universe (128 min.).
