Joanna Newsom Staff Pick

When: Mon., Aug. 2, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $32

With her Renaissance outfits, Baroque language, and thin, Cabbage Patch doll voice, Joanna Newsom always seemed like an odd choice for the hipster generation. And that's not to mention her instrument of choice -- a custom-made, gilded pedal harp from Lyon & Healy. That said, it's clear that Newsom's style transcends the strictures of era and genre. She sings in a spare, backwoods, Appalachian twang that verges on being medieval. Her melodies hew to a modern folk-rock form, but the natural delicateness of harp music makes it always seem a little older, a little dreamier, and a little more ethereal. Five months since dropping her third album, Have One on Me, the Mills College graduate returns to the Bay Area for a night of celestial strings and little-girl vocals. She performs Monday, August 2 at Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland), 8 p.m. $32
